Kindergarten Alphabet Crafts
Building a foundation of letter knowledge is an important part of kindergarten! As students learn how to identify letters and sounds, they need many different opportunities to practice in order for this knowledge to stick! One of my favorite ways to make this practice engaging for students is with hands-on crafts. In this post, I’m sharing Kindergarten Alphabet Crafts that your students will love!

The Benefits of Crafts in Kindergarten
Crafts aren’t merely a fun way to pass the time! They are an incredibly powerful learning tool that you can use in your classroom to help students master important skills all year long. While students are creating engaging crafts, they are also doing the following things:
- Improving Fine Motor Skills: Crafts require students to use a variety of fine motor skills. As they color, cut, and assemble the pieces of a craft, they are improving their hand strength and coordination.
- Learning to Follow Directions: We know how important it is for young students to learn to follow multi-step directions! Crafts are a great way for them to do this. In order for their craft project to turn out, students need to follow the step-by-step assembly instructions.
- Exploring Their Creativity: In the beginning, you will likely need to complete craft activities together with plenty of modeling and guidance. Over time, students will get the hang of it and can work more independently. This gives them a chance to let their creativity shine!
- Building Confidence: Students are always so excited to see their final creations on display! They take pride in their work, which can also improve confidence and motivation in the classroom.
These are just a few of the many benefits of incorporating crafts into the kindergarten classroom!
Kindergarten Alphabet Crafts
Since crafts can be such a helpful learning tool, they are a natural option for alphabet practice. Through the hands-on experience of creating a craft, students can get more experience with identifying and writing letters.

I have put together a set of alphabet crafts that are easy to incorporate into the kindergarten learning routine. Here’s how they work:
Step One: Choose a Template
In this resource, there is one letter craft for each letter of the alphabet. For every letter, there are three options to choose from.
- Black and White: This option gives students the chance for even more fine motor practice! They can color all of the craft pieces before cutting them out for assembly.
- Colored Paper: If you are trying to fit this craft into a shorter time frame, another option is to copy the craft templates onto colored paper. Students can then cut and assemble the craft. There is still plenty of fine motor practice for students when the crafts are copied onto colored paper!
- Shape Guides: The third option doesn’t use templates. Instead, it guides students to create their own image for the target word using different shapes cut from colored paper.
These options allow you to choose a craft project that works best for your classroom. No matter which one you choose, students will have fun assembling these crafts!

Step Two: Complete the Craft and Page
The next step is to decide how you would like to have students complete the craft. You could work together on this as a whole class, students could complete it during literacy centers, or you could have students work in small groups with a paraprofessional or a parent volunteer.
I have made it easy for you to guide the students through the craft! Each letter comes with a full-color directions page that you can display to students. The craft can be assembled onto a corresponding page that’s included with the resource. The page includes the uppercase and lowercase letters to trace, as well as the word that matches the picture.

Step Three: Extend
For students who could use an additional challenge, you can extend this activity by connecting it with writing. Each letter craft includes a writing prompt page that relates to each picture. This is perfect for students who are ready to apply their alphabet knowledge to additional learning tasks! Plus, it gives students even more opportunities to practice their handwriting and pencil control.
Step Four: Assemble
You can display the crafts as students complete them and then tuck them away. Once students have completed crafts for every letter of the alphabet, you can help them assemble the crafts into books!

This resource comes with a cover page that students can color. Then you can hole punch all of the pages and tie them together. Students will be so excited to see their completed books!
If you would prefer to assemble the books as you go, each student could have a small binder or pronged folder where they can put each craft as they complete it. Students can still color the cover page and attach it to the front of the binder or folder. This is a great option if you’d like your students to revisit their crafts as they continue to work on their alphabet knowledge.
