Word Family Sentences for Kindergarten
There are many ways that we can support young kindergarten students as they learn to read and become more fluent and confident readers. Word family sentences are one of the tools that I love to incorporate into literacy instruction. In this post, I’m going to share how word family sentences can support young readers as they build a strong foundation of phonics skills.

Using Word Families for Reading Practice
We know that explicit phonics instruction is essential for young kindergarten students. Incorporating word families into your literacy instruction and practice can support phonics development in several ways.
Phoneme Manipulation

Phonemic awareness is a foundational skill that helps our young students become skilled readers. One way to build phonemic awareness is to give students the chance to manipulate phonemes. Word families are a perfect example of how changing one sound in a word can create a new word. By practicing word families with your kindergarteners, you can incorporate this important phonemic awareness practice into your literacy routine.
Orthographic Mapping
As students learn to associate letters with the sounds they hear in words, they are able to identify those words with more automaticity. Word family practice can help students with this orthographic mapping as they begin to notice patterns in words. This can make it easier for these words to make it into their long-term memory.
Fluency Practice
Ultimately, practicing reading within word families can help students improve their fluency. They will be able to recognize words with automaticity and fluently read them within sentences. I’m going to share several ways that you can use word family sentences for more reading practice within the kindergarten classroom.
5 Ways to Use Word Family Sentences in Kindergarten
After learning how to read short vowel CVC words in isolation, it’s helpful for students to learn how to read these words within the context of sentences. This gives them the opportunity to practice these new phonics skills by reading them fluently in sentences. Here are five ways that you can use word family sentences in your daily literacy practice:
1. Review Phonics Instruction
The first way that you can use word family sentences in kindergarten is to review phonics instruction with your students. Each set of sentences is grouped by word family, so it is easy to incorporate specific reading practice into your literacy routine. You can easily select a word family that corresponds to recent phonics instruction within your curriculum.
As you meet with your students individually or in small groups, you can give them a chance to review the word family by manipulating phonemes to create the next word in the family. Once you’ve had a chance to review them, you can have students read the sentences one at a time. This can give you an idea of how your students are able to apply their phonics and sight word knowledge to reading words within sentences.

2. Sight Word Practice
One thing I love about word family sentences is that they incorporate common high-frequency words for students to practice. Students need a lot of repetition with sight words before they can read them with automaticity. Word family sentences are just one more opportunity to include this repetition with sight words!
3. Task Cards
Another way that you can use word family sentences is to create task cards for your students. These task cards are perfect for literacy centers, early finishers, morning work, and more!
Each group of word family sentences is color-coded, so they are easy to print and assemble into task card packets using binder rings. It’s also a good idea to laminate them for durability. Then, you can place these sentences into word work bins or at literacy centers for students to use for reading practice.
4. Roll and Read Fluency Practice
You can also use word family sentences for a fun reading fluency game! Roll and read is always a hit with students and is very easy to prep. All you need is a printable game mat and a numbered die. You can either laminate the game mat for durability or slide it into a page protector.

To play the game, students will roll the die and then read the sentence that corresponds to the number they rolled. As students play this game, they will read sentences multiple times. This is an easy way to give students the fluency-building experience of repeated readings! Plus, this makes the game open-ended; they can continue to roll and read until it’s time to rotate to the next learning station.
5. Exit Tickets
Word family sentences can also be a great way to add extra reading practice to little pockets of your day. For example, you could have a binder ring with word family sentences nearby when it’s time to line up. You can invite students to read one of the sentences before lining up for recess. By keeping them on a binder ring, you can quickly flip through the sentences so there is more variety.
