Kindergarten All About Me Craft

The beginning of kindergarten is such an exciting time to be in the classroom! There are so many important things to learn and do within the first week of kindergarten. One of those things is for students to get to know each other! In this post, I’m sharing an adorable Kindergarten All About Me Craft that you can use as an icebreaker in your classroom at the beginning of the year.

Crafts at the Beginning of Kindergarten

With everything else going on during the first week of kindergarten, it might feel like doing crafts with your students is an extra you don’t really have time for. However, I’ve found that using crafts at the beginning of kindergarten is a great use of time! Here are just a few reasons:

  • Calm Big Feelings: Many young kindergarten students have big feelings about being at school. There’s something about putting together a craft that can help students channel some of those feelings into a creative outlet. Crafts really are a great way to break the ice for young students!
  • Practice Using School Supplies: A class of new kindergarteners represents a wide range of familiarity with school supplies. Some students can use scissors safely while others need more practice. Crafts offer a fun way to help students practice using glue, scissors, and other supplies.
  • Follow Directions: For some students, learning to listen and follow directions is a skill that they need to practice at the beginning of the year. Assembling crafts can give them some of this much-needed practice!
  • Build Community: Helping students feel welcome and included in the kindergarten classroom is a big part of the first week of school. Crafts can be a great option for building community within the classroom. When students see their completed work on display in the classroom or hallway, they will feel like they are part of the community. This is especially true when the craft they create represents them somehow, like the craft I’m sharing in this post.

Kindergarten All About Me Craft

This All About Me project incorporates many different skills as students describe themselves using numbers.

Name Practice

First, students will write their name on the top page of the flipbook that will be attached to the craft. Then, they will count the number of letters in their name. The more practice students have with their names, the better their name recognition will be. At the beginning of the year, we want them to master this skill as early as possible since it builds confidence and independence when they can identify their name on their cubby, lunch card, and more.

One-to-One Correspondence

Next, students will use one-to-one correspondence to draw the correct number of candles on a birthday cake to represent their age. They will also use their skills to draw the number of people in their family. As students fill in the blanks on each page of the flipbook, they will also be practicing important number formation skills.

Measurement

This activity also gives students an introduction to measurement! Students will have their height measured in inches with a measuring tape so they can also document that number on the page. For an additional keepsake, students can cut a piece of yarn to the same length and attach it to the craft.

Color Identification

Once the pages of the flipbook are complete, it’s time to mount it onto a piece of construction paper. Students can use their knowledge of color words to request the paper color that they’d like to use as the background for their craft. This can help you get to know your students, because they often choose their favorite color!

Fine Motor Skills

Finally, students will practice fine motor skills, particularly their scissor skills, as they cut out the pieces of the craft and get them ready to assemble. Students will choose a face, hands, and hairstyle that they think best represent them. They will then attach the pieces to the paper so it looks like they’re holding the All About Me flipbook.

The final result is an adorable craft that students will be proud to see on display in the classroom or hallway. The flipbook makes an interactive display that students can use to get to know their peers better at the beginning of the year.

If you would like to incorporate this All About Me craft into your lesson plans at the beginning of the year, I’ve put together some easy-to-use templates! It includes all of the page templates needed to create this fun craft, including an editable template for the name page.

You can prep as much or as little as you’d like ahead of time in order to best meet the needs of your students at the beginning of the year. For example, if they’re not quite ready for a lot of cutting practice, you could have the faces, hands, and hair prepped in advance.
