June Morning Work for Kindergarten

The school year is drawing to a close, and the anticipation of summer break is almost tangible. This is the point in the year when many daily routines can be interrupted by special activities. However, your students’ arrival routine can still bring much-needed consistency to the end of the school year. In this post, I’m going to share some ideas to help you plan June Morning Work for Kindergarten.

June Morning Work

Morning Work Ideas for June

Morning work is intended to review skills that students already know. This means there are many activity options to choose from by the end of the school year! Students have worked hard all year to master a wide variety of literacy and math concepts, which can make it difficult to prioritize skills to review during morning work time. Here are some of the skill areas that you could focus on during June morning work in your classroom.

Phonics

First, students can review a variety of phonemic awareness and phonics skills. For example, they can listen for sounds in different positions within words and write the missing letters. Not only does this give students a chance to review letter sounds, but it also helps them practice letter formation. Students can also listen for a target sound and color the pictures that start with that sound.

Sentence Building

As students have become more familiar with sentences over the course of the school year, morning work can give them opportunities to deepen their understanding of sentence structure and conventions. In the activity above, students can unscramble words to form a sentence. They can use punctuation and capitalization as clues to determine the correct order of the words. After unscrambling the sentence, students can write it on the line for handwriting practice.

Writing

By the end of the school year, kindergarteners are also able to come up with their own sentences. They can also practice this skill during morning work time. In this example, students can write a sentence based on the summer-themed picture. Early finishers will love to color the picture when they’re done with their sentence!

Number Sense

It’s important for kindergarteners to have a strong foundation of number sense when they enter first grade. This foundation will serve them well during future math instruction!

There are many ways that you can incorporate number sense practice into your morning work routine. Students can practice counting in different ways, such as skip counting or counting on from a given number. They can also practice using ten frames to model numbers or to practice making ten. All of these skills are helpful to review before summer break.

Teen Numbers

Learning teen numbers can be tricky for kindergarten students, so it’s helpful for them to have extra practice with this skill during morning work time.

Students could practice teen numbers by coloring in base ten blocks to match the number. This can help students review that a teen number is made up of a ten plus some ones. Students can also practice counting with one-to-one correspondence into the teens. By using engaging seasonal activities, students can stay motivated to practice these teen number concepts each morning.

Addition and Subtraction

Finally, addition and subtraction are important skills that kindergarteners can practice during morning work time. You can make it even more engaging by using fun activities like color by code. In this example, students will complete an addition problem to fill in the code. Then they can practice their fine motor skills as they color in the picture.

Students can also practice subtraction during morning work time with engaging activities. For example, the fish-themed activity pictured above includes a helpful subtraction strategy that will help students complete the subtraction sentence.

More Ways to Use Morning Work Printables

If you have a different plan for morning work during the last few weeks of the school year, morning work activities can still be a helpful addition to your June lesson plans. Here are a few examples:

  • Flex Time: With special events and assemblies on the schedule, it’s common to have odd pockets of time to fill. Morning work printables are helpful to have on hand, since they are simple activities that you can hand out with minimal instruction needed. Students will be able to fill those pockets of time with meaningful activities.
  • Summer Review: Since morning work reviews many skills that students have already learned, you could add some activities to summer review packets.
  • Sub Plans: Writing last-minute sub plans at the end of the school year can be a challenge! It’s nice to have a few simple activities on hand for a sub to use with the class.

No matter how you decide to use morning work printables at the end of the school year, I know your students will benefit from these engaging review activities!
