April Morning Work for Kindergarten
As the weather warms up during the spring months, the pace of the school year seems to accelerate! During this busy season, itโs more important than ever to welcome students to the classroom each day with a consistent morning routine. In this post, Iโm going to share some ideas and tips that will help you make a plan for your April Morning Work for Kindergarten.

April Morning Work for Kindergarten
There are so many skills that students have learned by April, it can be difficult to narrow it down when it’s time to make a plan for morning work! Here are a few examples of skills that are perfect to review during morning work time in April.
Addition and Subtraction
By April, students have built a strong foundation of number sense skills and are learning how to add and subtract. Morning work activities can give students the chance to practice these important skills.

Morning work gives students the chance to practice addition and subtraction in multiple ways. For example, this one morning work printable includes the strategies of finger counting, ten frames, and crossing out pictures. This helps students strengthen their knowledge of addition and subtraction through a variety of strategies.
Word Problems
Math word problems can be challenging for young students, so itโs helpful to give them as much repetition as possible with this skill. The morning work routine is one place in your daily schedule where student can get more practice with story problems. You can even incorporate some seasonal fun with the theme of the story problems.ย

In this example, students will solve an Easter-themed addition word problem. There is space for students to draw a picture to help them solve the problem, which is another important math strategy. After drawing the two quantities of eggs and counting the total number, they will write the sum in the space provided.
Shapes
By spring time, kindergarten students have had a chance to learn about both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Morning work gives students the chance to review shapes before diving into their work for the day. In this activity, students will find and color the cones in a set of 3D shapes.

Blends
Morning work time is also perfect for reviewing literacy skills that your students have learned up to this point in the school year. Kindergarteners are introduced to so many new phonics patterns during the year! Having been exposed to so much new information, itโs important for them to keep these skills sharp with engaging review activities throughout the year.
For example, students can practice consonant blends as they identify the beginning sounds that they hear when naming pictures. After saying the name of the object in the picture, students will decide which of three blends they hear at the beginning of the word and then color it in.

Word Families
Students can also review word families in different ways during morning work time. This is a great way for them to listen for vowel sounds and ending sounds in words. When students can see familiar chunks within words, it can help them read with more fluency.
In the activity above, students will read and find words from the same family within a puzzle. As they find the words, they will color in the letter boxes. Not only is this great word reading practice, but itโs also a good way to keep their letter identification skills sharp!
Phonological Awareness
Itโs never too late in the school year to review phonological awareness! These are essential foundational skills that students will need as they become confident readers and writers.
In this activity, students will practice counting syllables. They will name each spring-themed picture, clapping the syllables as they say the word. They will then color the hands to match the number of times they clapped.

Writing
Finally, morning work can give your students the chance to practice writing letters, numbers, words, and even sentences. This review can help students strengthen their fine motor skills as they practice their written communication skills.
In this activity, students will fix a sentence by applying what they have learned about capitalization and punctuation. They will write the corrected sentence on the line for additional letter formation practice.
More Ways to Use Morning Work Printables
If you use a different resource like morning tubs for your daily routine, you can still use morning work printables to help your students review important literacy and math skills during the day.ย
- Literacy and Math Centers: Since morning work printables are designed to be completed independently, they are perfect for centers time! Students are able to stay engaged in the literacy and math practice with the seasonal printables.
- Early Finisher Activities: These engaging printables are also a great option for early finishers in your classroom. Students can work on these review activities while they wait for the next activity to begin. You could even assemble these printables into booklets that students can keep in their cubbies or desks for moments when they need a fast finisher activity.

- Flex Time: As the daily schedule gets busier during the spring months, we know how common it can be to have a few unexpected minutes. Whether itโs a cancelled guest visit or an assembly that ends early, you might find yourself with a few extra minutes during the day. Morning work printables are perfect for these moments! Students can spend this extra time reviewing important skills.
