November Morning Work for Kindergarten

Between conferences and holidays, November can feel like a month full of interruptions to the regular schedule. This is an important time to hold on to familiar routines like morning work as much as possible! In this post, Iโ€™m sharing November Morning Work for Kindergarten that will help you keep your routine on track all month long.

November Morning Work

Your students will benefit from knowing exactly what to do when they walk into the classroom each morning. They will be able to review important literacy and math concepts that they have learned, which also helps with independence.

Hereโ€™s a peek at some of the skills that students can practice with morning work in November:

Letter Identification

Kindergarteners have come a long way in letter recognition by November, but regular review is a great way to keep those skills sharp! One way that students can review letters is to match uppercase and lowercase letters. A strong understanding of capitalization will benefit students as they practice writing sentences with proper conventions.

Phonemic Awareness

In November, phonemic awareness continues to be an important foundational skill for students to practice. They can complete tasks like identifying rhyming words, counting syllables, and filling in the beginning sounds in words.

Sight Word Practice

As students become more familiar with high-frequency words, morning work can give students the chance to read and spell them. The more they can practice these words, the easier it will be for them to read them on sight.

Writing

Kindergarteners grow by leaps and bounds in their writing over the course of the school year! Morning seat work gives students the chance to practice writing in many different ways.

Students can practice letter formation as they fill in the beginning sound to complete each word. They can also practice writing sight words, which will help them with letter formation and sight word recognition. Finally, students can practice writing short sentences from an example.

Counting

There are many different ways to incorporate counting into your November morning work routine.

Students can demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by drawing or coloring an amount of objects to match a number. They can also count groupings of themed objects, writing how many there are in each group.

Since students are more comfortable with counting by November, they can also practice counting on from a given number.

Comparing Numbers

Another math concept that students can practice is comparing numbers. They can count and circle the group of objects that has more. They can also compare written numbers by coloring the bigger number.

Ten Frames

This is a great month to help students get more comfortable using a ten frame. This is a tool that will help students better understand future math concepts. For example, students can use ten frames to visualize how many more objects they need to make ten. This is a foundational skill for beginning addition.

Teen Numbers

Teen numbers are another concept that students can practice during morning work time. Students can represent teen numbers by coloring in ten frames. They can also practice number formation skills as they trace and write teen numbers. Each day, a traceable number is missing from the sequence, which gives students the chance to practice their counting skills as they figure out which number is missing.

Beginning Addition

Students can also practice beginning addition concepts during their morning work time. They can use number bonds to help them see patterns and visualize number relationships. They can also use dots on a domino to write an addition sentence.

More Ways to Use Morning Work

There are different reasons why morning work printables might not be the best fit for your classroom. For example, you might choose to use morning tubs instead of paper-pencil tasks.ย

You can still incorporate printable morning work into your daily routine, particularly any time that youโ€™d like your students to practice skills independently.

Literacy and Math Centers: If youโ€™re looking for a low-prep station for your literacy and math centers, give morning work printables a try! Since they are designed for students to use independently in the morning, they make great center activities, as well.

Homework: The familiar format of these activities makes it a great option for homework, if that is part of your daily routine. The short review activities are easy for students to complete at home.

Flexible Learning Activities: As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, November is a month with many different changes to the routine. Having some low-prep activities on-hand can come in handy when you find yourself with an extra pocket of time.ย
