December Morning Work for Kindergarten

December is a whirlwind of a month in the kindergarten classroom! Students have been learning at lightning speed and are eagerly awaiting the upcoming holiday season. You can help your students prepare for the long winter break with a strong morning routine of skill review. In this post, Iโ€™m going to share some December Morning Work for kindergarten that will help your students review important skills in an engaging way.

December morning work

December Morning Work for Kindergarten

A morning work routine can be so helpful in December, when students are eager to chat about their Christmas wishlists or upcoming holiday travel plans. The printables include a touch of seasonal fun, which can grab your studentsโ€™ attention and encourage them to get right to work.ย

Itโ€™s important that morning work includes skills that students have already learned, so theyโ€™re able to work with minimal assistance. Hereโ€™s a peek at some of the skills that students can practice during morning work time in December.

Phonemic Awareness

Itโ€™s important to continue phonemic awareness review during morning work time, so students can keep those skills sharp! They can identify both the beginning and ending sounds of words, as well as identify words in the same word family. By December, they can often rely less on pictures and look at spelling patterns instead.

Letter Formation

December is a great month to help students practice letter formation during morning work time. For example, the sight word task above gives students the chance to rainbow write the word, trace the correct letter formation, and then write the word on their own.

Decoding

After working hard to learn how to read CVC words, students could use time to practice this skill independently. Morning work is a great time for this! For example, students can color the picture that matches a word.

Sight Word Identification

In addition to decoding CVC words, students can also practice identifying sight words during morning work time. The page above includes a simple word search that your students will love! They will look for the sight word on each line of the puzzle and color in the squares once they find it.

Sentence Writing

Morning work is also a great time for students to practice writing sentences with proper conventions. In this example, students will fix the capitalization and punctuation of the sentence. This is also another way to incorporate handwriting and fine motor practice into your morning routine.

Counting

As the school year progresses, kindergarteners can practice counting in more challenging ways. In addition to counting a group of objects and writing the number, students can practice counting on from a different number. Not only does this help students improve their counting skills, but it also gives them the chance to practice number formation.

Teen Numbers

After working hard to strengthen their number sense for numbers 1 to 10, your students are ready to start reviewing teen numbers during December morning work. For example, they can color the base ten blocks to show teen numbers. They could also color the correct number of boxes in a ten frame to match a teen number.

Number Bonds

Composing and decomposing numbers is an important part of building a foundation for future math skills. When students can see the patterns between numbers, it makes tasks like addition much more approachable for young learners. This penguin-themed number bond activity is a great example!

Addition

Finally, students can continue to practice basic addition during morning work time in December. There are many different ways that you can guide students to write and solve addition equations. For example, the morning work page above uses dominoes to help students come up with an addition problem to solve. The dots on the dominoes can help students solve the problem independently.

More Ways to Use Morning Work

You might find that paper-pencil tasks arenโ€™t the best fit for the morning routine in your classroom. For example, you might choose to have your students work on morning tub tasks instead. These morning work printables are still a great tool to have in your toolbox for December! Here are a few ways that you can use these printables in your December lesson plans:

A variety of math morning work printables with a December theme
  • Sub Plans: December is a common month for illness, so itโ€™s helpful to have some simple review activities on hand for last-minute sub plans. Youโ€™ll be able to include these activities knowing that students will be able to complete them with minimal assistance from the sub.
  • Literacy and Math Centers: Morning work printables are also a great option for literacy and math centers! Since students are able to complete the activities independently, they are easy to incorporate into your daily rotations. Plus, the seasonal component makes them engaging for students!
  • Flex Activities: Between schoolwide activities, assemblies, and seasonal extras, there are so many interruptions to the daily schedule in December! Having some simple printable activities on hand can help you fill any odd pockets of time that inevitably pop up when assemblies end early or classroom visitors run late.
