Easy Classroom Management Through Songs!

In all my years of teaching, one of the best things I learned was that songs are the answer to almost anything. Whether learning math skills, reading strategies, or calming down a room, songs get the attention of the little ones. I have sung these songs so many times and for so many years that I have them memorized, but I want to share them with you. There are three sections to these songs: classroom management, calendar time and learning with songs. They’re all so fun and the kids always end up singing along!

Classroom Management Songs

Little kindergartners have a tough time stopping what they are working on and focusing all attention on you. I love using cute songs to grab their attention. They immediately stop what they are doing to join in the singing. At that point, I have everyone’s full attention and we can focus on the next task.

In this section of the Classroom Management songs you will find:

  • Quiet, Please
  • Have a Seat
  • The Carpet Song
  • One, Two, Eyes on You
  • Listening
  • Quiet, and You Know It
  • Cleaning Up
  • Off To Home We Go
  • Goodbye Chant

These songs are guaranteed to get your class nice and quiet and on task. The kids love them, but not as much as me. ????

Calendar Time Songs

Believe it or not, we incorporate songs in our daily routines during calendar time. We sing songs about the days of the week, months of the year, the seasons and the weather. I find it to be a great way to start each day on a happy note. In this section of the songs you’ll find are

  • Today Is
  • The Days of the Week
  • Every Week
  • Days of the Week
  • Months of the Year
  • Seasons Song
  • Weather Watcher
  • Weather

Kids really begin to understand how weather changes every day and throughout the seasons. They love singing about the days of the week and can demonstrate that they know the difference between a weekday and the weekend.

You can read about how I run calendar time here.

Learning With Songs

The final section of the Classroom Management Songs includes songs you can use all year long to reinforce learning. One of the trickiest things for students to remember each year, is to write their name on their paper. There is always a sad paper without an owner, but this song helps minimize that! The academic songs you’ll find are

  • Vowels
  • Sight Words
  • A Word On The Wall
  • I Can Spell A Word On The Wall
  • I Can Spell Because
  • Name On Your Paper
  • Sentences
  • Color Words

The kids love the songs about sight words because they can be so difficult to spell. While they are writing, I hear them singing our sight word songs to remind themselves how those words are spelled. With the fun songs running through their heads, there’s no way they’ll forget their sight words.

Organizing the Songs

To keep the Songs for the Classroom organized and easy to access, I laminate each song and put it on a metal ring. It’s a great tool to hang by the door or by my desk for assistants or substitutes to use when they enter the room. Like I said, I have them all memorized, but I want any adult helping me to be able to use the songs. I even added little tabs for the three sections: classroom management, calendar time, and learning with songs.

If you prefer not to have them on a small ring, you can print them and slip them into page protectors to store in a 3-ring binder. I keep mine at my desk with the spine labeled. Anyone that walks over sees it right away and knows exactly what it is. There’s a table of contents so all songs can be easily located.

I hope you are able to use these songs in your classroom! I haven’t found a kid that doesn’t like them yet.
