You’re in the Hot Seat!!

March 16, 2014 misskindergarten 7 Comments

When I taught first grade, we played a game called Hot Seat which my students absolutely loved. I pulled my teacher chair up to the front of the room and the kiddos took turns sitting in it {I think that might have been their favorite part of the game}. Well, a few weeks ago, I thought it would be fun to play with my kinders, but I knew I had to adapt it a bit since many of my kinders aren’t quite able to read yet. So I grabbed a stack of our CVC word cards from my Super CVC Practice pack and it was PERFECT!
Here’s how to play!
Call a student up to the hot seat {it can be your teacher chair or any chair you pull up in front of the students}. The kiddo sits in the chair facing the rest of the class. You, or another student, holds up a picture card so that the class can see it but the person in the “hot seat” can’t. Any type of picture cards will work, I just used these because I had them on hand!
Your class takes turns giving clues about each picture, without saying what’s actually on the picture {this proves very difficult for some students ;)}. For example, if the word was “bus” your students could say things like “it has wheels”, “you can ride it to school”, “it’s yellow” etc. The person in the hot seat has 5 chances to guess the word before their turn is over. My all time favorite was when we were helping the hot seater guess the word “cat”. One of my students said “it is domesticated”. Bahahha, gosh, I love my job! 😉
Anyway, this game is really great if you have a few minutes left at the end of your day and you need something to keep your students engaged. My kiddos love it and I know yours will too!
In other news…have you heard about the TeachersPayTeachers conference in Vegas this summer?!?

Sarah from @snippetsbysarah is a wealth of knowled Sarah from @snippetsbysarah is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to phonics and reading strategies! I love this strategy she shares to use with beginning readers who are struggling to blend cvc words in text. Encourage them to blend the first two sounds together first, then add the final sound. Have you seen these tap lights at the dollar tree? Have you seen these tap lights at the dollar tree? @teaching_linds colored them and had her students tap each sound as they sounded out the CVC words! This would also be an awesome tool to use with picture cards instead of word cards and have your little ones work on their phonemic awareness too! #teachersfollowteachers #iteachk #readandreveal
